The most populous and most famous island is Tahiti and the best known is the Muroroa atoll.

The main island of Tahiti is located in the archipelago of Social islands and it is divided into two parts: Tahiti Nui (Big Tahiti) and Tahiti Iti (Little Tahiti). Here is a list of things you need to see on Tahiti:

1) Shopping in Papeete
You can find over 200 stands that are selling products from each island in the archipelago. At their local markets you can find a lot of homemade stuff, from pineapples and vanilla to various kinds of black pearls. They have a lot of flowers and tropical hibiscus plants for sale. The prices of the merchandise are low in comparison to stuff you can buy on the islands next door. They are working from 6 in the morning till 5pm from Monday to Thursday and from 6 in the morning till 12pm and Fridays and Saturdays. The markets are not working on Sundays.

A lot of agencies can offer tours and provide better access to the interesting sights around the island. These tours with guidance give you all of the information about the Tahiti’s myths, customs and Taboos.

3) Tahiti Iti
The little Tahiti or Tahiti Iti is not so accessible and easy to get on as it is on Tahiti Nui because of its rugged terrain. It is so much worth it to cross over the plateau of Taravao and see the stunning white Maui beaches and the Teahpoo shore. If you are more an adventure type you can try hiking at the Pari trail which is located between Tautira and Teahopoo. This hike will last around two day and it will show you the rigorous parts of Tahiti. It is recommended that you find a guide because of the dangerous cliffs that can be almost impossible to cross due to heavy waves that are hitting the shore.

4) The museum of Tahiti and its surroundings
The museum of Tahiti named Musee de Tahiti etsesiles is an expensive museum for a reason because it is storing the whole history of the French Polynesia. You can find a lot of geological artifacts and some exhibits from the Tahitian history and their tradition. It has a lot of thing on display that show the live and the evolution of that part of the world from tattooing and brutal ceremonies to European colonialism. If you are interested in the history and the culture of the mysterious French Polynesia than this is a place you must visit.

5) The Valley of Fautaua and the waterfall
Taking a nice little hike to the valley between mount Diadem, Marau and Aorai all the way up to the beautiful waterfalls is an experience of the lifetime. In order to go there you need to have a permission from the town’s hall so you can have the full rights to enter this idyllic natural beauty. This could be achieved from Monday to Friday at 7:30 till 13:30pm. This site could be visited by a vehicle and it is not so expensive.

6) Museum of Paul Gauguin
If you can set aside some free time and do something that is not so risky you should try visiting the museum of Paul Gauguin. He abandoned Europe in the early 1895 and decided to spend the rest of his life here on the beautiful islands of Marquises and Tahiti. Some of his masterpieces are a reflection of his lifestyle on the island in this part of the world and the influence from the painters of the early European style. The thing about this museum is that you cannot find a single painting inside that belongs to Gauguin himself. But the information about his life decorated with his own personal artifacts in something that is interesting enough if are a person that admires the work and life of people who lived for art.
